If Gomez is to pull off a victory against Virchis he will definitely need to stick and move. Virchis is slow of feet but is very powerful. Here he is knocking out the always durable Robert Hawkins with a jab http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTI4Nzg4NTY=.html

That was a very impressive knockout

Hawkins is a strong tough guy that has gone the distance with big punchers like Samuel Peter, David Tua, Oleg Maskaev, etc..

Virchis knocked Hawkins down 3 times and KO'd him with a jab in the 5th round!

Virchis vs Gomez is an interesting fight...a classic boxer vs puncher matchup...I can see Gomez leading on the scorecards until he gets caught and knocked out by one of Virchis' sledgehammer shots.

      Virchis by KO

Wow... someone who went the distance with Peter, Tua and Maskaev got KO'd by this guy's jab?

I know he jumped head first into the jab, but... oh my god, that is insane!

Sounds like this is going to be a very solid fight.

By the way, these are the kind of fights that are good in the heavyweight division.

Klitschko is head and shoulders above everyone else, so most championship matches are pretty much a foregone conclusion.

But these contender bouts are great.

Arreolla (I know I spelled it wrong) vs. Witherspoon was good.
            Chambers vs. Brock was good.
            Povetkin vs. Chambers was good.
            This will be great.

It sucks that they are all vying for the opportunity to lose to Wladimir Klitschko, but... these fights are usually very evenly matched and very entertaining.

Virchis and Gomez are fightin for Peter and the WBC not Klitschko. Klitschko stays away from the WBC cuz he knows big brother and him will have a mandatory fight against each other. Haye should try and fight Chagaev after he beats Valuev and then unify with Klitschko the WBA/IBF/WBO titles.

I don't believe these stories about people being KO'd with a jab. Guys who are KO'd with jabs never make in in the pros past their first fight..... There has to be a lot more to it. Like having been KD several times in the fight already, off balance, legs gone, one foot off the ground etc.....and....just plain tired and giving up.

I see that Virchis has an 80% KO record, but, in looking at his opponents, I see that they are almost all in their late 30's, and mostly have had many losses, the majority of which were by KO.

This is exactly how Sam Peter built up his KO reputation, except that his opponents were barely amongst the living.

I like Gomez's style and flair. He has great skills, in direct inverse proportions to the rotten way in which he has handled his career. He should have been a Heavyweight Champ 5 years ago already. I feel he will win, he SHOULD win....unless he does something ******. AND he is a GENUINE KO artist.

I just meant it sucks that these matches down on the contender level don't mean much when they do finally step up to fight Wladimir, whether that be before or after a fight with Peter or someone else.

It kind of takes the fun out of a division when one person is just so far ahead of everyone else that it's extremely unlikely that anyone can beat him.

To be fair, Hawkins did jump into the jab, like Hatton jumped into the Mayweather left hook, so he did have his own velocity contributing to the impact of the punch.
