This is a thread dedicated to the former 2 time cruiserweight champ Jean Marc Mormeck. I thought I would post this as he will never get much attention as he was in a weak division. Imo he was a very good offensive fighter. He was a great body puncher and would double up to the body and head although he suffered from stamina problems. He was involved in some very exciting fights such as the 2 Bell incounters and his battle with Wayne Braithwaite.
Born on the 3rd of July 1973 as an only child he was 6 when he and his family moved to Paris, Mormeck engaged himself in football and Muay Thai as an amateur. After watching some boxing matches on television, he became inspired to excel in it
He fought as an amateur in 1990 and turned pro in 1995. On November 10, 1998, Mormeck won the French light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Alain Simon. He defended that title three times before moving up to cruiserweight.
Mormeck captured the WBA cruiserweight title by a 9th round technical knockout win over Virgil Hill on February 23, 2002. Following three defenses with wins over Dale Brown, Alexander Gurova and Virgil Hill again, he added the WBC cruiserweight crown to his collection on April 2, 2005, by way of unanimous decision over Wayne Braithwaite.
He lost his WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles to O'Neil Bell by knockout in the 10th round on January 7, 2006, for the undisputed (WBC/WBA/IBF) cruiserweight championship. Later, he regained them back from Bell (Bell lost the IBF title over a dispute from the organization) by unanimous decision on March 17, 2007.
In the first defense of his second title reign, Mormeck again lost his WBA and WBC titles as he was bested by the United Kingdom's David Haye on November 10, 2007. Haye recovered from a 4th round knockdown to get back at Mormeck and score a technical knockout in the 7th. Although Mormeck rose up just in time, the referee figured that he was in no condition to go on which caused a stoppage to be declared.
