One of the most lethal and destructive heavyweight wrecking machines in the history of the sport Vitali Klitschko returned to New York recently for the first time in many months. Business was the task at hand, specifically the introductory press conference for the awaited showdown with the WBC champ, the Nigerian nightmare Samuel Peter on October 11 in Berlin, Germany.
The former King Vitali is always a gentleman and has always been and continues to be very accessible for the boxing media. Though his English is not 100% perfect, when you listen to the thoughts and statements of Vitali during a press conference, it is very clear he is not only a very smart fighter but also a very, very intelligent human being.
At this press conference Vitali seemed to be the one with the mental edge and the more calm and composed disposition. First, let’s review some of the comments made by Klitschko:
Vitali on Wladimir vs. Povetkin: “Povetkin is a good fighter with good skills and a good future. But my personal opinion - he is too young. His promoter make the fight too early. If he fought Wladimir, I’m so sorry for him. Break his career.”
Vitali on his Olympic experience in Beijing last month: “In my personal opinion, in the future, they have to change the rules. Some special boxing will not be so attractive. Because every fighter just work not for audience, not for his moment (to show his) special boxing skills. Just for points. To make more points and step back. My personal opinion is it has to change.”
Vitali’s press conference statement delivered at the podium to boxing media and Team Peter: “It’s a huge motivation to be back in the ring. And a huge motivation for me to show my skills, my performance inside the ring. I promise for everyone the fight will be very interesting and emotional. And I promise I will give all my best to make history in boxing. All my best to take my belt back. I wish for everyone to take a lot of emotions from the fight. But this fight between two biggest punchers in present times will be very, very interesting. Don’t miss the fight on October 11, I’m looking forward to it. And I will have so many presents for Samuel Peter.”
Looking in excellent condition, Peter arrived to the conference over an hour late, because of a red eye flight. Klitschko was actually early by about 30 minutes. When Peter finally entered the room and stepped up to the dais, Vitali greeted him with a friendly handshake and words with a smile delivered to the effect of “Welcome Samuel you are finally here after making us wait an hour.” The two shook hands, Vitali smiled but I could not see Peter’s eyes or facial expression because his back was to me.
When the two combatants sat down facing the room, they both were dressed in suits and Peter wore a firm but intense look on his face. There is no doubt Vitali is very, or let me even say, extremely confident right now and Samuel Peter perfectly understands this dangerous fact. And in my opinion, Peter seems to be significantly annoyed about it.
Vitali Klitschko is supposed to be nothing but this big stiff bum who only beat an overweight golfer for the title and is expected by many fools to get haplessly injured again in the first week of training camp.
But Samuel Peter is no fool. Like his promoter Dino Duva said, Peter knows Vitali will be an even more difficult challenge than was brother Wladimir. But Samuel Peter doesn’t really know what he is in for on October 11. Vitali Klitschko, if he is still the same warrior who slaughtered Kirk Johnson and Danny Williams today at age 37, could destroy Peter’s carefully choreographed career. Or will Vitali be a shell of himself? Or perhaps, will Vitali be even mightier and more vicious, now inspired and motivated by the awesome success of his younger brother. You know how Big Brother complexes work, don’t you?
So when it was Peter’s turn to address the audience and his gigantic challenger, you could clearly sense the distress inside. He spoke with passionate emotions, as if he were the prey who has been now at last cornered by the predator. Also, Peter spoke very fast, almost a mile a minute, incoherent at times. “…so stop saying you had the belt. You never had the belt. I’m the heavyweight champion…I never ducked no one fight. I never was scared from no one fight. When I fought (inaudible, presumably he meant McCline) my left hand was broken. I lost five pounds in that fight. So I’m the true heavyweight champion of the world…On October 11 it will be very nice to show everyone that I’m still heavyweight champion of the world. I’m going to knock him out. Trust me. I’m the heavyweight champion of the world.”
Peter attempted to tell everyone that Vitali was never really the legit champion because he won the Lennox Lewis vacated title against Corrie Sanders who had previously KOed Wladimir Klitschko in two rounds. Peter himself won the WBC title from Oleg Maskaev who had won it (by KO over Hasim Rahman) after Vitali retired three years ago because of injury.
The media and fans have built Samuel Peter up into almost the savior of the heavyweight division. Bernard Hopkins has said Peter is his favorite heavyweight boxer to watch. Max Kellerman claims Wladimir Klitschko’s supremacy is not legit until he defeats Samuel Peter a second time.
All this talk and hype is getting interesting. I will go out on a limb here…Peter vs. Vitali Klitschko will be a memorable and violent battle, and the most intense and exciting world heavyweight title fight since Vitali vs. Lennox Lewis on June 21, 2003.
