  • Why Do So Many Great Punchers Have Suspect Chins?

I know not all of them are chiny, but there have been a whole lot of murderous punchers with suspect beards.

Tommy Hearns, Julian Jackson, Tito Trinidad, Chico Corrales, Rafa Marquez just to name a few.

    Why is this?

early in their career punchers get fed bums to demonstrate their power and hardly get hit with a good shot. once they get a punchers rep, they strike fear in their opponents, if they werent getting hit before, they aint gettin hit now. once they step up their competition and fight world class fighters, they get chinchecked and realize that they got glass chins

I've noticed this trend also. It maybe their training habits. They may train for power and punching rather than endurance and stamina.

Jaidon Codrington, Lennox Lewis could be added to that list.

For the most part, punchers can take it as good as they can give it. They got no choice but to bring a good beard to the ring cuz they're 90% offense and 10% defense. The punchers who have shaky chins have em cuz they lose confidence when they're gettin tagged back. It has sumthin to do wit mental toughness, maybe more than physical toughness. Some punchers can't help but crack when they are gettin hit and stood up to.

There are plenty of counterexamples as well. Foreman, Marciano...I don't think there's any correlation between chin and power other than the fact that big punchers often leave themselves more open to shots since they're more offensive trying to land that power. They don't tend to be the slickest of fighters defensively.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They're always seeking a position to hit hard, and that leaves them in a position to not take punches to well.

Lennox lewis wasnt much of a puncher though..
He banged some mans out but they were past punch resistance by then..
He could bang but i wouldnt call him a puncher

I don't think he created the opportunity to finish people, after all he called himself the pugilist specialist.

tito didn't have a suspect chin.

                    his chin was solid.

he was knocked down a lot in the early rounds because of a combination of balance and not being warmed up yet.

                    tito was rarely ever hurt.

he was koed once in his career and it was more of the i am exhausted , i have nothing left , i give up type ko losses.
