I've sat here year after year in London watching the fights, from the good old days, til the recent ones, and only a few handful of fighters over the years have had what it takes to beat the U.S fighters or even the south americans. I'm a die hard brit, and I'll be honest, you yanks used to annoy the **** out of me with your 'soccer' talk and the way USA is built as a palace in terms of boxing while we're stuck here with flippin Setanta and fat son of a bitches like Harrison.
I ask myself, what is it that makes USA the best country in the world when it comes to boxing ? Is it the fact you're literally built on money and once again can attract large crowds seeing as you have at least 3 times as many occupants in that large land of yours. But it's a number of things, you lot over there are willing to pay for your PPV while whenever the word PPV pops up over here in Europe you get a sigh and a groan... people need to understand that USA is built on money because the residents are PUTTING money into the sport... the fighters get loads more money, the arena's are more glamorous, the commentators are top class, even the ring girls are of an incredibly higher standard than ours here. Therefore, boxing has improved and the image has improved. We're stuck here in England with Setanta, ITV, and sky, a monopoly when it comes to digital t.v so they charge ****** amounts for fights or subscription.
Even technically the fighters are of a much higher standard, it wasn't long ago when one of our top prospects in the LW division, Junior Witter, was outclassed by an 'unknown' in Bradley. Last night, our top prospect, Mr Khan, was floored in 54 seconds by a Columbian who was unknown and disregarded before the fight. Hatton lost to Floyd, Joe narrowly beat Hopkins imo (I'm a massive fan of Joe but I was sitting there with my head in my hands when the verdict was about to be read out).... I used to hate on USA for their monopoly of boxing, but it came a point when I realised that USA own England in boxing, because for every good fighter Britain has made, America makes a fighter twice as good (in general obviously), so it comes a point where the media and fans get so pissed off they have no choice but to overhype our fighters to make them look good... we have to big up even the smallest of victories because we know across the pond he would probably get beaten by one of your lot in the same division. This leads to an insane amount of pressure being put on the fighters, and in the end, they crumble.
I watch British fighters and think 'you would get spanked by a yank', because technically you seem to be better than us. We see the likes of Enzo and Ricky boast about making a living from boxing in the 'underhills of Wales where we have a small gym and a few punchbags' or 'the tough streets of Manchester where fighters can concetrate without the aura and distractions big cities like L.A or NY have for fighters', but deep down, we all know they'd rather train in USA, because the U.S has the best trainers, best facilities, and the aura you get when training on America really must catalyse a fighter and motivate them more... it's like saying 'I have a ford Fiesta and my mate has a Ferrari, but I'm happy with my Fiesta because it's a nice little car and it does what I ask it to'.... when in fact we all want the Ferrari.
Even the trainers are better... we have Khan who was taught by some idiot in Bolton, when clearly he needed a Mayweather... when he took in Rubio I was livid, yes Rubio has an incredible record for the amateurs and has trained some amazing Cubans, but I don't think he's the man for Khan... every fight we see Khan say 'I'm stronger than ever, faster than ever'... well Amir, you need to work on your DEFENSE you plum so go to USA and get a proper trainer in some like Snr or Roger, or Freddie.
I find it no suprise that David Haye trained in USA and beat Enzo who trained in some ****hole in Wales... the motivation, facilities, where there for Haye which gave him an advantage, and what seemed a 50/50 bout, was won in style on Haye's behalf.
So, this post, is to say USA you are the kings of boxing (I used to say this through gritted teeth), and you deserve all the success you've had. You are the messiah of boxing, and until the English accept this, you will carry on being the kings. Full respect to you.
