One of the most lethal and most formidable heavyweight champions in history is about to make his spectacular return to the ring. At age 37 Vitali Klitschko will clash against Samuel Peter to attempt to regain his WBC Heavyweight championship in Berlin, Germany on October 11. The legend of the ring with the awkward but highly effective style, who was never losing in any of his 37 contests except for accepting defeat largely because of the shoulder injury to Chris Byrd and the facial cuts to Lennox Lewis, spoke with *************.com recently in New York City.
It was our first in-person meeting with Vitali Klitschko in a couple of years. Any questions and curiosities were immediately answered with polite but persuasive vehemence as the 6-ft, 7-in tall Klitschko appeared in absolutely superb physical condition along with his typically extremely confident demeanor, although the one noticeable change in the man with the 92% KO percentage is he is now sporting a few more gray hairs. Proceed to read for your reading pleasure, the very insightful comments and statements Mr. Klitschko articulated regarding Samuel Peter, his training, motivation and much more…
“I want to make history in boxing. To be at the same time with my brother world champion in the heavyweight division. Always great to make something special. Right now we have a chance.
For three years I have been training every day. I have been great shape. I live healthy, don’t smoke, don’t drink. And I look forward very optimistically. I take all my medical tests, check everything, my body is healthy. Sometimes break is good from the sport. Right now I feel very good, I’m very hungry.
Big motivation. It’s main reason why I’m here.
I spar with many fighters, some who punch me, who touch me in the head - takes a special threat. I spar with lightweights, because I need the reaction.”
Vitali you look and sound as powerful as ever. Is this true?
“You could see on October 11 how good is Klitschko. Every day since my retirement I spend in the gym, every day I’m in great shape. I feel excellent. I’m 100% ready. I don’t have a problem any more.
My special program I develop with my coach (Fritz Sdunek). And I’m very thankful to Emanuel Steward, he works with me as advisor. And we develop some program and I don’t want to show you this program because it’s special for me and it’s my small secret [smiles]. I change my preparation for every opponent and that’s why it will be special preparation with special exercises.
My brother always give me energy, power and support to help me reach my goals.
Samuel Peter is a very strong fighter, he’s actually biggest puncher right now in heavyweight. And that why this fight will be very interesting. If you see my fight records and see the record of Samuel Peter, I don’t think the fight will be by points decision.”
Vitali, what most concerns you about Samuel Peter?
“He’s good for me. His style I don’t worry about. I know Samuel Peter very well. And I prepare for this fight very good. I study many fights from Samuel Peter, not just (my) brother fight. And I know he’s a real world champion. And I know Vitali Klitschko. This fight will be very interesting. It’s two world champions, two punchers, meet each other in the ring and let’s see who will be the winner. Who has the better skills. I know the answer.”
You prediction of the outcome on October 11?
“It’s better one time to see, (than) 100 times to listen.
If you remember my sport career, I thank everyone who doubt my skills, I am very thankful for these people. Because these people make motivation to show it’s not true.”
What has been the most difficult part of this comeback?
“Right now it doesn’t feel some most difficult fight. Matter is who be most difficult part of career of my opponent. For him it will be very difficult. Because I am more than sure Samuel Peter never fight against a fighter as me.”
Vitali, do you still hold aspirations to get a rematch with Lennox Lewis?
“The last time we have a contact - I just saw Lennox Lewis a couple of months ago. This fight will be very interesting. But will it be realistic? I saw Lennox Lewis and my personal opinion - he needs a couple of years to get into shape [laughter]. He enjoys the life too much.”
Stay tuned to *************.com for Part 2 of this interview where Vitali Klitschko discusses what he thinks of the Olympic boxing event of Beijing where he watched the action live, his thoughts on Wladimir vs. Povetkin, who the toughest opponent he ever faced was plus the ultimate compliment he paid to this special adversary, and more…
