Insider Notebook: The Risks, Rewards of Oscar v. Manny

By Robert Morales - Manny Pacquiao is more popular than Floyd Mayweather Jr. was before he fought Oscar De La Hoya in May 2007, promoters Richard Schaefer and Bob Arum said this week. That's why they believe that Pacquiao-De La Hoya on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas has a good chance of breaking the record of 2.4 million pay-per-view buys set by De La Hoya-Mayweather.

“Mayweather really became a celebrity after the (HBO) 24/7 show with Oscar and then with the Ricky Hatton fight (seven months later),” said Schaefer, CEO of De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. “Mayweather really used those platforms very wisely. He is a very clever guy. He really became the star he is today, who really transcends the sport and is known in general households. But that is really not the way it was before he fought Oscar.”

The numbers bear that out. Prior to fighting De La Hoya, Mayweather had sold 325,000 pay-per-view buys for his fight with Carlos Baldomir, 365,000 for his bout with Arturo Gatti and a high of 375,000 for his riot-marred fight with Zab Judah. [details]

If only DLH gets rid of that shoulder roll defense, if he does Roach's plans go out the window.

I think its a plan for him to let Money May come out of retirement so he can fight him again, which I highly doubt, Money is retired for good is you ask me..

pacquiao posed to retire after hitting the jackpot. he got all he need in boxing... prestige... and above all... money.

but if pacquiao upsets delahoya, even i doubt he will, it will tempt ugly boy floyd to come out from retirement... and face pacquiao in a superfight.

              that's how i see it.

Size doesn't matter if they will meet at 147! If DLH used to fight at 154 and Pac at 130, how would 130 a half of 154???? Should i call you ******, hmmn???

I agree, Pac deserves to retire after this fight because he got it all. But he should consider also that he is still in his prime and very effective fighting machine, he can reap more millions for lets say 3 more years in boxing. After these years he will never be the same again. But the worst scenario of his retirement is, his decision to return back in politics! I heard that he will be running for one of the national offices, a bad omen! Philippine politicians are generally crocs, they will just milked his millions in politics. Besides, i doubt if he will win! Filipinos loves him in boxing not in politics! I hope if he retires he will not let his image tarnished just for politics, better he should stay away from politics.
