Hugo Garay vs. Jurgen Brahmer Set For October 18

Itīs official: WBA light heavyweight champ Hugo Hernan Garay defends the title against # 1 challenger Jurgen Brahmer October 18 in Dresden. However, German media writes today that Brahmer is in the middle of another investigation for assault. This time a man in Schwerin claims that Brahmer - on parole until September 15 from another sentence - punched him following a argument in a pub. Universum spokesman Christof Hawerkamp is quoted by news agency DPA as saying that the Garay fight shouldnīt be in any danger. Brahemer himself denies all wrongdoings. Co-headlining in Dresden is WBO jr. middleweight title-holder Sergey Dzinziruk defending against Colombian Joel Julio. [details]

This should be a good fight. I hope I can find some stream so I can watch it from this side of the Atlantic.

What a surprise! Garay is forced to make his first defense in Germany against Germany's favorite son, Brahmer. Brahmer has done absolutely nothing at light heavyweight to deserve his ranking or a title shot and Garay beats him if the fight is anywhere but Germany. But Argentines, including Garay, have a long history of losing close decisions in Germany. Garay will likely need to knock Brahmer cold to get a draw, and he's not a puncher, so he's likely to "lose" a split decision.

If Brahmer is arrested and convicted, that would be his third assault conviction in 10 years.

He did beat Mario Veit avenging an earlier defeat. Don't know if that is much of an accomplishment as Calzaghe shellacked Veit twice.

I think Garay can stop him though. The boy has a lot of pop in his punches.

The judging in Germany is no worse than anywhere else.

Lots of European fighters have been robbed in the US (Sturm - De La Hoya) British fighters have been robbed in the US (Holyfield - Lewis I), Mexican fighters robbed in the US (Castillo - Mayweather I), European fighters robbed in Britain (Kotelnik - Witter), etc.

Sturm-De La Hoya is now more than four years old. And oh, by the way, Sturm got to fight De La Hoya because he got a German hometown split decision to "win" the WBO middleweight title against Hector Velazco. He is from, you guessed it, Argentina, like Garay.
Of course there are robberies everywhere, but to say judging isn't worse in Germany ignores the facts. Percentage wise, it is harder for a foreign fighter to win a decision in Germany than anyplace I can think of. Ottke's middle name wasn't "Split Decision" for nothing. Erdei, Beyer, Sturm, Drews, etc. All pretty much the same.
This is a set up to give the local boy a title. Nothing more
