“Fighting Words” – Diaz-Katsidis: Better Late Than Never

by David P. Greisman - Whether your sport of choice takes place on a diamond or gridiron, hardwood, ice or pitch, before the first day of the season you will know what you’ll get long before you know what you truly have.

That is, schedules are set. The Red Sox and the Yankees will face each other 18 times. The Cowboys and the Redskins will do one apiece in Dallas and D.C. Whether the teams are any good that season matters not – they’ll play either way.

As for the best teams, they soon rise to the top of the standings. Anticipation builds. If they are as good as their records indicate, then they’ll meet each other in the postseason to decide which of the two is better.

That isn’t necessarily the case when it comes to action inside the ropes. Often you know what you have long before you know what you’re truly going to get.

Getting the best fighters to face each other can become the negotiating equivalent to pulling teeth. So many factors can stand in the way: mandatory opponents, rematch clauses, different promoters, network contracts, greed or boxers just plain not wanting to face a certain somebody else. [details]

Maybe it is because he goes looking for them and is willing to fight anybody anywhere instead of staying at home and fighting cab drivers and Japanese novelty acts.

Katsidis may not have Mundine's technical abilities but at least he gets out there and gives it his all against top level competition. If Mundine had had a bit more of this heart and ambition in his prime he would have been remembered as a far better fighter.

              ?!?!?!?!

He has YET to be in a big fight...

Casamayor was his first title challenge. Wasnt even close to big. And he is only getting in with Diaz because Diaz lost his last fight and they both need big rebound wins.

not sure what ur talking about...

They say Rocky is going the best he has , Brendan is extremely confident going into this fight so Im told .

I didn't see Katsidis yesterday, but the folks at the gym say the Aussie of Greek descent has been looking pretty sharp.

"Michael looks well from what I've seen," said Dean Byrne, an 8-0 junior welterweight prospect from Ireland who has relocated to L.A. to further his career. "He definitely looks better than he did before the Casamayor fight. If he had the form he's showing now [before the Casamayor fight] I think he would have beat Casamayor."

Roach agreed with Byrne's assessment of the usually relentless slugger from Down Under.

"[Katsidis] has been boxing for this camp," he said. "He looks a lot better now than he did for Casamayor."

One of Katsidis's sparring partners, junior featherweight prospect Alejandro Perez, was in the gym while I was there.

Perez, a 22-year-old from Salinas with a 12-1 record, sparred with Katsidis a few times last year (when the Aussie thought he had a match with Joan Guzman) and went six rounds with him this past Tuesday.

"The last time I sparred with Katsidis he just stood in front of me, wanting to go toe to toe," said Perez, who now lives in Los Angeles where he trains and also attends L.A. City College. "Now he's moving more; he doesn't stand in one place. And he's also working on his counter punching.

"He's good when he boxes. I'm thinking that he can beat Diaz and I wouldn't have said that last year."
