Nine Nations Claim Gold; Lomachenko Named Top Boxer

By Jake Donovan - The 2008 Olympic boxing tournament came to a close Sunday afternoon in Beijing China, with finals taking place for the remaining six weight classes. None of what took place on the day, however, would factor into who was named the Games’ top boxer, as Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko was the runaway winner for the Val Barker Trophy.

All told, nine separate nations took home Gold among the 11 different weight divisions, none of which went to Team Cuba, who for the first time since 1968 failed to win a Gold medal in any Olympics in which they didn't boycott. Despite the infamous achievement, their eight total medals (four Silver and four Bronze) was far and away the most of any country in the 2008 Olympics. [details]

does anybody know if that Mongolian won gold?
He was the only other guy in the same stratosphere as Lomachenko.

Yes, he won gold, and he'd make a excellent pro boxer. His name is Enkhbat.

I was also impressed with Sarsenbayev, the welterweight gold medal winner from Kazahkstan.

                great! thanks.

I see him being pretty damn hard to beat, so big at the weight, with beautiful footwork, timing and ability to maintain distance. He'll be a world champion for sure if he turns pro IMO.

What odds do you reckon you could get on Lomachenko becoming a future World Champ? I might have a flutter.

short I'd imagine he'd knock out Alex Arthur in about 40 seconds, lol.
