Nah, he's still a top guy. It always depends on whom is doing the rating though.

What I do think people got overexcited about was Cotto outboxing Mosley. Not the fact that he beat him (Mosley actually did better and gave Cotto more trouble than I expected), but the outboxing part. Cotto's always had solid boxing skills, and Mosley's always been a speedy slugger more than a pure boxer anyway.

Of course he was overrated and its not even up for debate. Every good fighter that comes along has people that overrate him and will tell you that he can beat anybody. Thats the way it goes.

No he fought though some great tests but on the night he had the wrong tactics and tried to stop Margarito when he couldn't and Margarito just piled on his pressure and chipped away at Cotto's stamina and heart until Cotto had left everything in the ring.

he wasn't trying to stop Margarito

he boxed and ran all night, a safety first fight if ever there was one

Yeah he was overrated. You know the way Lennox Lewis was till he was KTFO by journeyman McCall. He was really exposed, and then again when he was KTFO by mediocre, 3rd tier Rahman. What a loser that Lennox. Just like Louis was exposed when he was stopped by Schmeling, or Ali when he lost to Frazier and Norton.

Truth is, we won't know whether Cotto was overrated or not until his career is over. How he bounces back from this loss will determine what kind of champion he is. I have no doubt that he is a better fighter than Margarito, that was always just a bad style match up for him.

And yes he did try to stop Tony, wasted too much energy doing so, and if there's a rematch I look for him to tie up more and smother more on the inside.

                  RESPECT FOR COTTO!
honestly, if the judges would have scored that fight accurately, Castillo would have been disqualified... dude was throwing low blow combinations that would make Golota proud... back on topic, I don't think Cotto was overrated by guys who know boxing, I do think a lot of band-wagoning by fans & fringe critics made the hype around him way bigger than it probably should've been but I understand boxing needing the buildup for a "superfight". Cotto's been a good solid bruising puncher at 140 against the smaller guys and showed improved movement and boxing skills at 147. His Heart, fighting pride and vulnerability have drawn a lotta casual fans to him but I always thought it would get him in trouble once he faced a guy his equal in size and strength. BTW, if you want to see a questionable decision, watch Cotto vs Ndou at 140... (I suspect Lovemore had something to do with Miguel cutting his hair)

Cotto wasn't overatted, Margarito's ability to withstand punishment and his fervant resolve to be victorious on that night was underrated.
