    2008 Olympic Boxing Scoreboard - Semi-Finals

By Jake Donovan - Results are in for the 2008 Olympic semi-finals. Team Cuba sent eight fighters into the medal round; they are now down to four. Team China went 2-1 on the day. Great Britain and Ireland split their two head-to-head matchups. Both countries sent three fighters to the semi-finals; both countries went 1-2.

Russia sent four to the medal rounds and are left with two, though one is Aleksei Tishchenko, who is all but without peer at lightweight where he is a shoo-in to capture Olympic Gold. Team Ukraine is down to their last chance for a gold medal, though they have to like their chances as featherweight Vasyl Lomachenko continues to wreak havoc on the rest of the world. The southpaw has only allowed a total of 12 points in four Olympic wins this year and now faces France's Khedafi Djelkhir.

Finally, Team USA bows out of the competition, with Deontay Wilder falling considerably short in his heavyweight semi-final with Clemente Russo of Italy. His loss leaves USA with one Bronze medal, tying the 1948 squad for the lowest medal output, but ranking the worst all time since the aforementioned team at least escaped with Silver.[details]

I really hope DeGale can bring home the Gold. He's looked very slick so far, but it's a huge ask against an experienced Cuban. Whatever happens, I think DeGale could make a very decent pro.

I like Degale a lot as well, though both he and Sutherland looked a bit sluggish in this morning's fight (wee hours of the morning on my side of the pond). Still, he's been one of my favorites to watch - Sutherland as well, for that matter.

I was rooting for Paddy Barnes and David Price to go to the finals as well, though I knew Paddy was in an uphill battle and stood little chance against Zou.

Tishchekno and Lomachenko both need to turn pro, it's almost unfair watching them compete against other amateurs. Both are hella fun to watch, though.

Russo will run from Chakhkiev like a frightened chicken. I'm hoping Rakhim can catch him.

same here. I'm not a fan of Russo's style at all. Be lovely for Rakhim to knock him out

              any of them any good?

for some reason i am intrigued by the chinese super heavyweight, i wonder if they would let him turn pro. (this is just based of the scores of his bouts, i have not scene him fight)
