I've been reading alot of the post about Paul Williams. The man has a solid fan base, however its not his fans that will provide him with greatness its his actions. So far Paul is definately paving his way to super stardom. His "I'll fight anybody" attitude is a breath of fresh air in the boxing community. Theres no mincing words or humble opinions when you ask Paul Williams where he ranks in the welter weight division. His ability and style get over shadowed by his freakish size and extreme work rate while in the ring. His only loss was avenged with a 1st round destruction of Quintana, also he has a victory over Margarito. So where exactly does that place Paul in the Welter Weight division? Margarito disassembled Cotto in 11 rounds to claim the top spot in the welter weight division but how can you be number 1 when you haven't avenged your loss to Paul? I'm not bashing Margarito and I was very surprised that he beat Cotto. However I was hoping that he would conduct himself like a true Aztec Warrior and beat the man that gave him a loss. Instead what we're getting is Margarito practically begging for a match with Oscar Delahoya. I understand that fighters are in the game to make money, but when a man isn't even interested in giving you a match then its time to find another opponent not sit there and come up with multiple excuses not to fight the one true challenge to your crown. Cotto vs Cintron most likely won't happen until 2009, but seriously where does that leave the winner. Certainly not in a postion to fight either Williams or Margarito. I personally believe Cotto is going to beat the breaks off Cintron (I've been known to be wronge before, it won't be the first time) but where does the winner go from there? That would give Berto enough time to have a couple of defenses and solidfy his claim as the WBC champion and create the kind of fan base that would make a Berto vs. Cotto/Cintron match lucrative. I'm just speculating and dreaming of some nice matches in the Welter Weight Division.
The business side of boxing is really screwing us over, and I'm starting to get tired of it. Theres no sense in fighting Delahoya unless its to fatten your pockets. Fighters should be getting paid the big bucks for fighting the best opponents, not aged fighters that have seen their better years close to a decade ago. I seriously hope that if Oscar fights the Pacman that he gets KTFO and is never heard from again.
