GL: Obviously, the situation with your eye is keeping you out of the ring. Tell us about how you've been dealing with that, and what you've been doing to keep yourself busy, and make sure the ends are meeting comfortably. "I do a commercial real estate program to keep myself busy. In the meantime, I keep my hope alive, my faith in God and his miricle powers to help my vision to come back. On April 24th, I'm going to have shoulder surgery. This year would have been a bad year in boxing anyway, with the shoulder and the eye together. I'm still looking forward to coming back, I just need to get back to being healthy, all the way."
GL: What's the official diagnosis of your eye? Is this the most difficult thing you have to deal with in your life?
Calvin Brock: This is definitely the most difficult thing I've had to deal with in my life. The diagnosis of my eye is permanent blindness, due to a complication after a surgery. I think the doctor messed up, Dr. Justin Brown is his name with the Charlotte?? Eye, Ear, and Throat Specialists. I think he messed up. I was supposed to be able to see something the day after surgery, but the day after the surgery, I couldn't feel anything. I had been able to see prior to going into the surgery. I think the doctor messed up, but I don't have any proof in the record to show he messed up. The only thing I can do is have faith in God, and his mircle healing power. That's the hardest part, man. Going from seeing, seeing real well too, then coming out not seeing, and then having to pay for it. That's what's messed up about it.
GL: Have you been keeping yourself in shape, have you been to the boxing gym?
CB: I train a couple of boxers, two of them are making their formal debut. One of them is named Brown, and the other one name is call. I don't know his last name, I would have to look it up. KY Ali is his name, Cal. Their making their pro debut in Charlotte, on somebody else's card, some local promoter's card. That keeps me sweating, keeps me in shape. I weigh about 240.
GL: That's about how much you weighed for your last fight.
CB: Yes. (laughing)
GL: Why are you laughing so hard?
CB: I weigh 240 when I'm not training, I weigh 240 when I am training. That's not right, is it?
GL: No, you're a Boxing Banker though. We're banking on it. So, now the Boxing Banker is banking on a miricle to return to boxing.
CB: Absolutely.
GL: You're always welcome on **********. Anytime you want to branch off and do some journalism, I'm definitely open for that discussion the Boxing Banker mailbag, things like that.
CB: I appreciate it. What I want to do is get into some boxing commentating.
GL: Give me closing thoughts.
CB: Keep hope alive for the Boxing Banker to make his return, because I still believe I'm the best thing in the United States of America, in the heavyweight division.
