“Fighting Words” – No Thanks: A Cash Course in Negotiating

by David P. Greisman - Upward mobility has brought fighters out of poverty and beyond adversity, taking them to a world where fame is measured by fortune, where seven-digit paydays are the ideal, each additional zero demonstrating how far they have come from when they had nothing.

On their way up they were hungry – for change, for accomplishment, for rising as high as their fists, wits, determination and discipline would take them. But upon arrival the idea of competition applied not just to pugilism, but also to prosperity and its requisite prestige.

Not that they’ve become complacent. They’ll still put in the roadwork and sparring, the crunches and dieting. The readier they are for the next challenge, the richer they’ll become when the next one arrives. As important as winning in the ring has always been, landing the first blow in negotiations is now the same.

Getting the most favorable terms possible on a contract before signing on the dotted line has made the pen as mighty as a left hook to the liver. And it’s not just about money. Sticking points have included the size of gloves, the brand of gloves, the weight class, who walks out to the ring first, the size of the ring itself, where the bout takes place, cuts of domestic and foreign television fees and whether Gatorade could be given to fighters between rounds.

Manny Pacquiao’s proposed showdown with Oscar De La Hoya reportedly got many of the usual sticking points unstuck. But then a sharp difference in the financial breakdown punctured any hopes that the five-division-titlist Filipino Firebomber would take on a Golden Boy who captured belts in six different weight classes. They dont. Only DLH does. As for every other pro boxer....Careers are short and most have rough uneducated upbringings. Whats the point of dedicating blood sweat and tears into the sport if after its all said and done they gotta go back to driving cabs or working at home depot because they have no degrees and are unqualified for anything else?? 550,000bucks for Lacy sounds like alot but its far from financial security you can retire with.

If you're Manny Pacquiao and the most you've ever earned was $5 million, how do you walk away from $10 million? Is principle -- in this case, winning in negotiations -- worth $5 million? Or in this case even more, so I doubt Manny will get $5 for any of his potential next opponents.

But if you're Lacy and that's all that's available, you take it. Either your career is worth getting back on track, or it isn't. Zab Judah took $100,000 to fight Cory Spinks in Spinks' hometown. Judah won that fight by knockout and was back on the map.

Manny deosn't want to get embarassed by DLH for the money he is being offered...A KO loss to DLH will strip manny of his P4P claim....He can make more money with less risk against smaller fighters....$10Mill and it could also end his career too he has never been in the ring with a man that big and as skilled as DLH...One left hook could put out PACMAN career for good..In any case Manny knows DLH doesn't want to take on Tony or one of the bigger WW so he is maybe holding out for a few mill more...Lefty

Lacy in my mind should take the money and run. he needs a win ovr a big name to get in the big fights gain for the big bucks. He gets in the ring with Taylor and wins he lines himself up for bigger and better things. If he gets in the ring and it is an entertaining fight maybe a rematch for more money is in order and then he gets his 7 figure pay day he seeks now...Lefty

Yah.. you’re right! It’s principle is at stake! Isn’t because he can get 8 digits that come into terms for a 30% share from a big pie, but a blatant insult to all of his accomplishment he made. DLH is a big man but he should give also even a little respect to his foe that is not a chicken feed in the ring, for lets say 40% for the P4P king, huh? Back down from the 8 digits that supposed to be brought by 30% share from a big pie is an issue without tears for pacman because this how he had priced his pride and principle. Fighting in a 7 digits in a much small pie of which he had prefer instead is far acceptable without putting his pride and principle on the line. But remember, 8 digits is far richer than 7 digits… but who said that he was only for money???

So lets say Lacy took the money and won but unimpressively. Then what?? You're right back at square 1. Very rarely do fighters without fan friendly styles make big money. All Lacy would have is money that would last about a year and possibly a permanent injury to show for it. This is why fighters like Pac who are actually in a position to choose bargain for every cent they can get.
