How could Margarito have done nothing if he was the longest reigning welter champ at that point?

I think it was more of a money/ credability factor.

People even now dont really know who Maragrito is unless its a mexican or hardcore boxing fan.

Yes Margarito was a champ but he was coming off of some losses too. A loss even at a heavier weight class will still make your marketablilty drop enormously.

It looks better on record to defeat a dangerous undefeated fighter than to fight a fighter who is just as dangerous if not more but has a couple losses on thier record

Way more credible than Margarito

Why not fight Collazo. It would look good on paper , he most likely would look impressive and make more than an antonio margarito anyday.

margarito is one of the sloppiest champs

You say Hyping Margarito? Whats there to hype except a huge Welter who moved down because he cant handle the power of middleweights. the guy has lil skill, throws wildly and misses half of his punches. I give him credit for high workrate but in 2002 I dont anybody had super high hopes for the guy.
