Also, I think the rematch with Shane Mosley who was definitely falling off the face of the boxing planet was probably for his legacy, or as you put it, facing his demons (avenging his loss) as well.

If he were able to get Trinidad again, which he apparently tried to do, that would be facing a demon.

Other than that, no real fights have been personal to him.

Actually, maybe the Chavez fights, since Chavez was such a ****ing ******* to him in the build up to those fights.
I dont think any of those fights had the same effect as the vargas fight had on him, mostly because

    1. Vargas was mexican and came up almost about the same time as he did

    2. Vargas was closer, being from Oxnard, it effected him in his hometown

    3. Vargas had been chasing Oscar for years trying this best to lure him into a fight, insulting his every move and his ability to even hold down his mexican fanbase

    4. De La Hoya was at a crossraod in his career, unlike the Chavez, Mosley, Trinidad fights, this fight could have broken him because of the fact that this was a guy who basically insulted everything he stood for, the way he spoke, everything, and he was doing it in the LA Area, there is nothing worse than a rival who is basically within the same vicinity as you, turning your own fans against you, when you are coming off of a huge loss.

    5. Mayorga taunted him, but Vargas geniuinely hated him, Mayorga does that to everyone, but moreso than Mosley, Trinidad, and Chavez, Vargas was personal at every level, from respect, to who was "more mexican" to proving to his hometown fans that he wasnt finished. With Chavez it was more a passing of the torch, but if vargas had won that fight, he would have that in his head forever. Moreso than the tito loss or any other loss, because it was a crosstown mexican rivalry where everyone was against him from the onset, that being his own people, in his own town.

I dont think you get the concept of a personal demon at all.

          Very eloquently put...

It also got a LOL out of me.

I think you are right by the way... the post you made with the 5 points convinced me away from my original belief to what you said. Nice job.

Although I still contend that Oscar chasing Tito for a rematch is an example of him trying to fight a personal demon.

Vargas and mayorga felt the wrath of the left hook complements of tito. Who is more mexican?? I see the rivalry between oscar and vargas but if he would of beat tito he would have all the mexicans jockin whether they wanted to or not!!! Tito was the man and oscar blew it!!! Vargas was just a another tainted ***el in the crown. Tito was the crown yo.

If Oscar fights Margarito, it will be a 90-10 split in favor on Oscar.

Vargas chased Oscar his whole life. HIS WHOLE LIFE. His whole goal was to dethrone Oscar and become THE mexican in LA as far as boxing goes. This goes all the way back to his amatuer days. THAT is why that fight meant everything to Oscar, more than any other fight. You are so bent on bringing tito into the equation that you yourself dont understand my point, i dont give a **** about resume or who was the better fighter, that didint matter. Vargas whole career goal was to beat Oscar and have Oscars fans be his own, and he came very close to doing so. Get tito off your mind for just 2 seconds.

Idk how close he actually was. The scorecards were basically tied, and there was no guarantee that Vargas was going to take back over in the last two rounds.

That and the timebomb known as Vargas's chin was going to crumble under the first good left hook that really landed (which is how the fight ended obviously).

Good analysis on the story behind the fight though. I had no idea about most of that.
