To be honest i don't know much about McGirt the fighter, I shouldn't assume but from what i have read i got the impression he was a journey man.

This is really subjective, what do you consider great, a world titlist? a good journeyman?
As a trainer, what are the parameters?

i would assume he means a trainer who has won a part of a title and has trained a guy who would eventually win a part of a title

Roberto Garcia won the IBF super featherweight title and later him and his dad trained Vargas and as a trainer his fighters have won titles.

When i think of great i think of guys being elite fighters that are going to be in the HOF or close to it.
