A good journeyman of the era was George "Scrap Iron" Johnson who was tough as nails and fought everyone.

Ross Puritty should be mentioned for KO'ing Wladimir Klitschko and fighting just about everybody of the recent HW era.

do you consider him more of a contender than a journeyman?

        he koed norton.

how would you classify mccall? i think earnie and oliver are around the same level.

McCall was a journeyman early in his career until he knocked out Lennox Lewis.

Shavers was a power punching prospect with a padded record (45-2 at one point, with almost all by knockout). He was exposed by Quarry for his chin and after that had to take on bigger challenges, winning some , losing some.

With wins over Ken Norton, Jimmy Ellis, Jimmy Young, Roy Williams, Joe Bugner, Howard Smith and Henry Clark, it's hard to say he was a journeyman because he was ranked at the top of the division many times. The decision against Ali could've been given to him.

but that was his .44 magnum right winning him those fights though.

for the most part contender level fighters would expose his bad chin , tendency to cut and/or lack of stamina.

just because he had better management in the beginning doesn't make him better than mccall. to be honest mccall to me was better skilled. mccall just had his issues.

sometimes i feel shavers' power made him ranked higher than he was. the reputation of power does that. look at tua. though i admit tua is better skilled than shavers.

I don't know if he counts as a journeyman, but if he does: George chuvalo. That guy fought EVERYONE. He probably would count as top contender though.

Ben Tackie is probably my favorite journeyman.
