      I think Arum was playing the whole Mexico vs Puerto Rico angle.

      Alfonso was chosen simply because he was Mexican. I agree that a much better opponent would have given Cotto better preparation, but might have also been a risk were he to get hurt or injured.

          You can also look at it this way. The majority of the boxing world thought Cotto was going to beat Margarito.

          So Margarito was just going to be Cotto's tought preparation for an Oscar De La Hoya fight. Remember Cotto wasn't supposed to lose this fight.

              gomez was a garbage fight. it did nothing for cotto in preparation for margarito. cotto should've fought baldomir in preparation for margarito. baldomir is a lighter hitting version of margarito.
