I was wondering if I can get some info on him. I know very little about him and never heard of him until tonight when he was mentioned on FNF. So he has an amazing amateur record but couldn't cut it with the elite pro's? Whats the story on this guy?
Mark Breland

Breland had a very successful pro career, becoming the welterweight champion twice. He wasn't an all time great but he was still an outstanding pro with an excellent hard left jab. Plus he is one of the classiest people in the sport. I think injuries cut his career short. -
I see, thanks. A couple times he said something along the lines of(and I'm paraphrasing heavily), "You do what you have to to win. No regrets." Anything behind that?Breland had a very successful pro career, becoming the welterweight champion twice. Because of his brilliant amateur career the expectations were that Breland would be the next Ray Leonard. Of course he fell short of that. Breland wasn't one of these ultra intense boxers like Duran and not as ambitious as Leonard. One thing I always admired about him is that he never made excuses when he lost. I've never met the man, but I think Mark was satisfied with his boxing career and didn't have as much problem walking away as most former stars.Comment

Breland was an amazing amateur, that right hand was devastating.
Breland was a good professional fighter, he never lived up to the expectation that people had for him but as Scully said, who can? He still managed to win a welterweight title twice.
He was also an unbelievably tall guy for a welterweight standing at 6'2 I think and had the skinniest legs on a welterweight I've ever seen but he carried some serious power and he had a very, very good, powerful jab. I remember him hurting and putting Honeyghan down twice with the jab, first time I'd ever seen that.
I guess his faults at welterweight were that he wasn't very physically strong at the weight, he also had some stamina and chin issues but still, he was a very good fighter.
That was a good read, it managed to convince me that Breland was the greatest amateur ever.http://www.maxboxing.com/News/Scully070808.asp << This might help

I was/am a huge Breland fan. Most of his fights were avialable on regular TV through ABC's Wide World of Sports, so there's lots of us older folks who got a good dose of Breland.
I was always nervous watching him throw. It seemed like some part of the stickman was eventually going to snap! He defintely had a physique fashioned after the Hearns model, but slimmer.Comment
