The question is whether or not Jones in his prime would've beat Tarver. I lean towards yes but I'm of the opinion that Jones would have trouble with Tarver even on his best day. The signs are all there.
In the amateurs, Jones suffered a standing eight count against Frankie Liles, a tall, lanky power-hitting southpaw.
Prior to Tarver, his sole knockdown came from an extremely big southpaw in Lou Del Valle. And Eric Harding troubled him as well.
So I think it's safe to say that Jones would have always had trouble with Antonio Tarver.
Jones' big mistake was that he attempted to avenge a win. That's a bad move and as much as he gets knocked for "not taking risks" it's funny how, unlike other fighters, he didn't take the W and run. But Jones always was a risk taker--ironically, it came back to bite him against Tarver.
As for the weight issue, I'm sure it affected him some but even worse was that he was aging. Some of us noticed it nearly three years earlier when Derrick Harmon landed a ridiculous 59% of his power punches against Jones. Fighting a much slower fighter in Ruiz helped mask that slipping--****, Clinton Woods gave him a tougher time.
Antonio Tarver would have caused many problems for a younger Roy but unless he was capable of pulling off what he did in the rematch EVERY time they fought, most of their fights would've looked a lot closer to the first one, with a more FLEET-footed Jones winning a lot more rounds handily.
