De La Hoya needs to fight Margarito to secure his LEGACY!

Serious thread. I love De La Hoya. He has been great for boxing, great great pay per view ratings. Exciting fighter. A true warrior.

Now think about it. De La Hoya's last notable win was in 2002 against Fernando Vargas. That was almost 6 years ago. Then before that there was a span of 3 years where he only beat Ike Quartey in which many thought was a very close fight. Then he beats Whitaker, Camacho, and Chavez all past prime fighters. He nearly lost to Whitaker.

Now that i have outlines his best wins, lets take a look at his losses. You will see his losses outweigh his wins by miles. He loses to Floyd Mayweather, future HOF, Bernard Hopkins, Future HOF, Shane Mosley twice, future HOF, Felix Trinidad, Future hof.

When DLH has fought the elite of elite in their primes he has come short. He needs to fight Margarito. Win or lose it makes him look like a warrior who wanted to come out fighting the best at his weight. Beating an undersized Pacquaio is taking the easy way out.

Come on now. He has nothing to prove. Been there, done that! He is a legend and desrves to be. Tell your buddy Margarito to fight the guy he lost to. That's what he need to do!

im a fan of oscar, but at this point legacy is not as important for him as getting a paycheck

eventhough he's got enough money, he's a businessman first, fighter second. it was the other way around 10 years ago

It would look great for him if he did fight Marg however I don't think he needs to.

come on, his legacy was secured long ago. He's past his prime and everyone knows it, he doesn't need margarito, margarito needs odh.

the only reason they SHOULD fight is because oscar said he'd fight the winner of cotto/margarito. that's it. Other then that, or being a great challenge and good way to go out as your final fight, there really is no purpose.

Of course I'd love to see them fight, but be real.

No he doesn't he's old, very old in welter terms. He fought the best lost and won some. Won titles at 6 weight divisions and beaten people like Quartey along the way to do so. If he fought Marg it would be another feather in his cap but he doesn't need it to define his fighting legacy.

I think that's a far stretch. Oscar has had meaningful fights in his career whether he won or lost them. He's still to this day a relevant name regardless of him fighting maybe once a year. People also tend to forget he fought guys like Sweet Pea & Chavez before he became what he is today which at the time (at least Sweet Pea) were risky fights.

I know you're a big Margarito fan, but you can't **** on Oscar because he won't fight your man. Give the man his due.

De La Hoya is going to the HOF...

However, he'll never be considered a great fighter on the same level as a Ray Leonard, Hagler, Monzon or even a Roy Jones.

Would a win over Margarito change any of that? I'm not sure. It's a lil late in his career and he is a bit past his prime.

But then again, you never know. Fighters like Bernard Hopkins, Lennox Lewis and Archie Moore did some of their best work in their mid-30's...
