MARGARITO'S GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
Hey Dougie,
As a huge De La Hoya fan, who was drawn into boxing while growing up and watching the Golden Boy on HBO, I hope he opts to face Margarito in what DLH says will be his last fight. I respect Oscar as a legend who has never ducked anyone and who has fought the most impressive list of opposition out of any boxer in the modern era. However, I feel that facing Manny in his farewell bout is a bit of a joke, and it will leave a bad taste in the mouths of the fans...
Shouldn't Margarito be the fight Oscar wants? Well... no one WANTS to fight Margarito, but as the biggest threat out there for him at the time, shouldn't this be the only challenge that he deems worthy of ending his career on given his history of seeking out only the best fights for himself?!? Sure, Margarito may beat the hell out of him, but Oscar has always had a chip on his shoulder about not be recognized and loved as a Mexican warrior. Wouldn't this be his chance to gain acceptance?
Yeah, I know- he's worried about the Mexican backlash if he beats the current Mexican Hero, a la the Chavez fights, but that was a fight in which he was the young stud dismantling an overmatched, past-his-prime Mexican Legend. Oscar has nothing to lose in reversing the roles. Now HE would be the past-his-prime legend taking on the young stud. If he can go toe-to-toe with the Mexican Terminator and prevail, he will surely gain acceptance with Mexicans as a true Mexican Warrior. Should he lose, he can retire confident that he has ALWAYS fought the absolute best, down to the LAST fight of his career! If he loses in a valiant way in which he stands his ground, he will endear himself to Mexican fans as a Martyr of the Mexican people who sacrificed a glorious, career-ending victory as well as his health for the glory of Mexico in his farewell bout! I hope he makes the fight!!!!!
I also vote for Paul Williams to fight on the undercard of my proposed mega-bout against either a) Clottey, b) Mosley, c) Cotto, d) Collazo, e) Berto, f) Quintana, or g) Cintron (in that order too). This way, the inevitable rematch b/w Margarito and PW will be properly built up so that they both can come out of the rematch as winners financially! Your thoughts?!? Take Care, Dougie! Peace.
