Looking back at 2008 so far, I've noticed a fair amount of Catch weight main events (as well as being on PPV). let me show you if you haven't noticed
January Roy Jones Jr. vs Tito Trinidad PPV @ 170 this was Tito's comeback fight, and well it might have sold well on PPV ... getting 500K buys, but the fight attendance was absolutely awful (read an article that said it was at 12,00 capacity, which for anyone who's been at MSG, the Garden can hold a lil over 20,000 just some food for thought.
February Pavlik vs Taylor 2 PPV, I'd like to know how this sold on PPV as I have no idea, but anyway, this gets a pass as it was a contracted rematch if Taylor lost that he could get to fight Pavlik at a fight above 160, which happened, this fight was at 166.
May Oscar De La Hoya vs Steve Forbes, on regular HBO, fought at 150 hyped as a tune up for DLH for the proposed rematch with Mayweather, which since Floyd retired I guess Forbes may have turned out to be a tune up for Manny Pacquiao.
June the Abraham vs Miranda rematch on showtime, fought at 166. Edison broke Abe's jaw in the 1st fight, Abraham fights at Middleweight, so he moves up 6 pounds to fight Miranda. other then revenge I think it was a dumb fight for Edison to take as establishing himself at Super Middle woulda been a better approach, o well just my take, and a bit too late now.
then there's of course the Pavlik-Hopkins PPV at 170
so what do you take of all these catch weight bouts taking place (and main eventing) that's not even taking into account last year when Hopkins fought Winky at 170 on PPV (also a catchweight.)
