..TRUE/FALSE: Beating Someone Heads Up, Means You're The Better Boxer...

This thread is driven based on all the Margarito love and Cotto hate after the tremendous fight that they had this passed weekend.

If you lose heads up, do you think it makes the winner the better boxer.. period?

    Yes or no?

No, there have been many instances throughout the history of the sport where the better boxer has lost to someone who is not as good a boxer, it doesn't make his opponent the better boxer, a better fighter, a better puncher or the better man on the given night but not a better boxer.

not necessarily, the best technical fighters dont always win. ( cotto marg is a good example) styles make fights

often technical boxers box their way along in a fight and dont do enough to cement the decision in some eyes (not aggressive enough), thats why you see some very skilled fighters constantly in close decision fights (floyd, winky, b hop....) so sometimes the less aggressive but technically better fighter loses a close decision, especially if they are challenging for a world title...the landed the cleaner shots but arent seen to be aggressive enough or landed enough telling blows to win a clear cut decsion unfortunately

and sometimes styles win you fights like kostya and vince as was mentioned.....kostya didnt do so well against high pressure fighters but he has a much better legacy etc than phillips

tarver and roy is another example

I think you can have a fighter better then a boxer and a boxer better then a fighter.

Margarito is better fighter then Cotto.
Cotto is a better boxer then Margarito.

If that makes any sense. I would say that a heads up match up doesn't always end with the more talented fighter winning, but that doesn't change fact that the better Margarito won the fight and Cotto won the boxing match, to bad it was a fight.

That depends. In some cases it does and in other cases in doesn't. For example, Frazier beat Ali but that does not mean that he is a better fighter. It meant that he was the better man that night. With all due respect to Frazier of course, he is a true legend.

A one dimsensional pressure fighter could beat a slick elusive pure boxer 1000 times, but it doesn't mean he is a better fighter becuase style makes fights. In some ways, it could very well mean that the fighter is better. For example, Margarito beat Cintron twice and he IS a better fighter than Cintron is. So, it could work both ways but i would personally say no. Hope that made sense.

Actually, he took a knee. His corner essentially threw in the towel. You'd realize this if you weren't being close-minded.

Furthermore, this was ONLY sparked by the fight. It wasn't only referring to it. Just fights in general that play out like this.

As soon as this fight was made I predicted Tony would win, not cuz he's the better boxer in terms of skill cuz he's clearly not. It's cuz he's tougher and hungrier than Cotto. This ain't the first time a good boxer has lost to a guy wit inferior skills to him. Hell, Mayo beat Vernon 2 times.
