Sources close to the situation have informed BoxingScene.com that talks are ongoing to match IBF junior middleweight champion Verno Phillips (42-10, 21KOs) against undefeated prospect Ronald Hearns (19-0, 15KOs), son of legendary former champion Thomas Hearns. The fight would take place in the fall. [details]

Hearns has done nothing to get his shot at a title really, but that's OK because of his last name.
Still though...it will be cool to see him fight a legit opponent. He has been coddled thus far. Verno will probably exploit every last weakness he has. Heopfully Ronny lands a big right hand before that happens though. -
True Kirkland has the better record (22-0)
it'll only be a matter of time before Kirkland gets his shot.
Super Welter is a pretty dry division so I would think in another 3-4 fights Kirkland could be in a title fight of some sort.Comment

I can't wait to find out if this happens and when it will be! I can't wait to see both of these fights - yes!Comment

The rumour about Glen Johnson possibly fighting Shaun George sounded more interesting to me, people were saying that Johnson had 'ducked' George...
Yes, Ronald has done nothing to earn this title shot, but then again neither had Phillips.
Size and age are all on Ronald's side, this is the best chance he will ever get at winning a world title against a near 40 year old Verno Phillips.
But it could be the difference in experience that will decide this match-up, Phillips was lucky to get the win over Spinks though.Last edited by TheGreatA; 07-30-2008, 03:54 PM.Comment

Interesting match up. I suppose Hearns best bet at beating a champ would be against a 38 year old, 10 times beaten, 20 year pro. That said we dont know if Hearns is good enough to do that. As far as styles go, Hearns has good pop, but Phillips hasnt been finished in 20 years.
Are there any strong believers in Hearns? Anyone whose pretty sure he pulls it off?Comment

I like what I saw in Hearn's last outing! But, I don't know if he is ready for Championship level comp yet! Name Recognition in its true form. And JrMw division is starting to shape up nicely though!Comment
