Im no Margarito fan, but I think I will have to agree with the OP. Theres a good chance Cotto will not be the same after this fight. This was a fight he was not expecting to lose and lets face it, he got beat on pretty bad. I think the fact that the fight ended by TKO makes this worse, its one thing when a fighter loses a fight by decision, or flash knockout but when you get busted up like that it changes everything. I do hope Im wrong though.

mab took a beating much worse in pac1 than cotto. cotto was actually winning in the first half of the fight while mab was mauled from the first round on. mab came back and strung up 6 wins which includes EM, peden who had KO'd nate campbell twice, juarez2x, etc.

I think losing your zero by quitting/throwing in the towel takes a heavy toll on your psyche. It wasn't a robbed decision, or a lucky punch it was being saved from a battering. That kind of loss is hard to bear and even harder to put right.

Saying that Cotto is a classy guy and I hope he comes back stronger.

Getting cut doesn't indicate you took a beating. It indicates you just got hit by a WW with 8 ounce gloves.
Yup. Margarito got hit with some tremendous shots as well. I remember my dad saying that one of Margarito's weaknesses was cuts and I looked at him strangely. After the fight Margarito's face didn't look as bad as Miguel's, but you could see that he didn't earn the victory effortlessly, he worked his ass off for that.

The problem: Miguel's face didn't hold up as well as Margarito's. Again, severely battered nose+left cut opening up more and more from the second round=blood loss...which makes it seem like Cotto was massacred. Those uppercuts that Margarito landed however were his bread and butter punches, and he landed them, flush on the face and with the way Cotto ducked, you can imagine how much that had to hurt when they landed repeatedly throughout the fight on that gushing nose. Margarito took more punishment in the face, his head snapped back various times throughout the fight, but he has a tremendous chin and doesn't seem to cut...which makes it seem as if punches don't do anything to him...that must been psychologically intimidating when being in the ring with him.

In fact, name a fighter who was regarded as highly as Cotto, yet took such a beating.

Hagler took a beating and came back just fine, in fact, better. Also, the only Ricans that really smell are actually Dominicans mistaken for Puerto Ricans...Dominicans however do have a good fighter, but he's half Puerto Rican. He's the one that put Diaz in a comma.

Also you're right about the broken nose affecting Cotto's power and stamina as it was broken late in the first round. Now let me break it down...
Margo is 5'11" and Cotto is 5'7" and lord knows what their actual fight weights were when they stepped into the ring.

Cotto did take a sustained beating, but he also gave one de salsa. Both Margo's eyes were closing and his entire face was swollen.
Now here's the difference when he's matched with a Puerto Rican his own size and weight. That granite chin turned into a glass jaw real quick, in fact, he got sent packing back down to 147 by Santos ...

                  REALLY?

When's the last time a fighter came back undiminished from that type of physical and mental beating? Name 'em.

I have seen many fighters - including some recently - who were on an upward arc, but had their careers derailed by exactly that type of beating... or a similar thrashing.

                  Examples:

                  Hamed post Barrera

                  Lacy post Calzaghe

                  Hatton post Mayweather

                  Taylor post Chavez

                  Vargas post Trinidad

I'm hopeful that Miguel will be back and will be as good or better. but, as a betting man, the odds are against it.
i agree with you 100 percent.. exept the hamad berrara fight .. hamad was never hurt in the fight i t was a very close fight....but cotto was getting abused he should never watch that fight until his career is over

WHAT Mararito hurt? oh the audacity

you should be ashamed of yourself for even considering the thought.

on a more serious note Cotto will be back, and will win the rematch .. as long as it doesn't happen in 2008.

I think it's a bit premature to compare this fight to Chavez-Taylor as Taylor was pissing blood at the hospital and much more physically beat down
