Margarito should have to prove that he is worthy of holding on to the title first. Anyone can win a belt. Defending it against top opposition and keeping it is the hard part.

Really? I would say beating and taking the belt from a fighter like Cotto is better than fighting for an open belt and defending against b level fighters.
