Through the 1st 6 rounds Cotto used the ring well. Countering shots and using his speed and boxing skills. To me after he got hurt the 1st time, it was then after it looked to me as if Cotto just began back pedaling and was letting Margarito get those rounds which lead to Margaritos punch activity and eventual breakdown of cotto. What do you all think?
Did Cotto start running after he felt Margarito's power?

He was without a doubt in survival mode... And was still landing clean shots the whole way, (Which was unbelieveable to me that 7th round was BRUTAL) but after the 7th he was on some serious life support.Comment

I voted no because Cotto was already moving before he ever got hurt. The unrealistic pace he set with his feer was a partial cause for his eventual doom. That style was totally out of the element of what made Cotto.Comment

nO HE DIDN'T... HE HAD BEEN BACKING UP FROM THE START.
It was just all that backing up that tired cotto out... could you imagine punching/being hit/ and sidestepping for a full 6 rounds...?
That is very tiring!!
I bet any money if a rematch Cotto Wins!!!!!!!! first to say it!!Comment

When you got a man hunting you down round by round, unmoved, unwavering, relentless that can punch for power it just breaks you down physically and mentally. There was nothing Cotto could have done to get out of all the punches Margarito threw at him with pure conviction. He fought bravely although he ran for most of the fight, but his sharp punches cut throw and landed with power, unfortunately for Cotto this man just doesn't feel any pain.Comment

Actually after I rewatched the fight I would agree that it was after he got tagged by Margarito that he started that tactic. Margarito dinged Cotto to more the body earlier in the fight then people noticed. He was digging to the mid section with left hooks to the body and Cotto was obviously discomforted by it. Those shots hurt him early and I don't think a lot of people noticed.
Margarito invested in the body from the first round on. He was hurt later in the fight, but Margarito's power was felt early on and was fairly obvious if you look at his tactic change just in the first round, after one of Margarito's digging hooks to the body as he scooted a long away of the ropes very quickly. Cotto thought he could sit in trade a little at first and realized he couldn't at all.
Cotto knew that he had to move because of punches that landed early even though they weren't as volumous or as strong. Margarito landed more punches early then the announcers gave credit to obviously showing favoritism to Cotto, overlooking some nasty body punches that Margarito landed. I seen around 15 nasty body shots in the first two rounds.Last edited by poeticlsykuac; 07-27-2008, 01:46 PM.Comment
