“If he wants the fight, he should provoke.”
This is what Oscar de la Hoya is reportedly awaiting from Manny Pacquiao before he takes on the challenge of facing the Filipino boxing king.
A source cited by SportsNews.ph said that though de la Hoya is open to face Pacquiao, the celebrated American boxer is not about to instigate the intriguing match.
“Oscar will be in an awkward position if he himself will challenge Pacquiao. Oscar is the bigger man, physically, so it will be like an adult bullying a young boy,” said a source from de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
Both the camps of Pacquiao and dela Hoya, however, seemed to be agreeing that a fight between the two boxing superstars can be made.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum earlier said in an interview over dzSR that he already had initial talks with Golden Boy about the possibility of staging a de la Hoya-Pacquiao fight in December.
Arum revealed that dela Hoya is looking at four names to choose from for his farewell fight: Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Felix Tito Trinidad, Miguel Cotto and Pacquiao.
He said that as of now, Mayweather and Trinidad are out of the picture. The former has already retired while the latter has climbed in weight.
“That leaves two fighters for Oscar to fight on December 6: Miguel Cotto who is fighting next week against Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao,” said Arum.
Arum said he will discuss everything with Pacquiao as soon as the Filipino four-division world champion arrives in Las Vegas this weekend to watch the Cotto-Margarito fight.
Pacquiao had just won the WBC lightweight crown from Mexican-American David Diaz whom he stopped inside nine rounds.
The fight, which has shown Pacquiao use a vastly improved right hand, has made coach Freddie Roach believe that the Filipino can handle de la Hoya
“That performance is really what sets me to make that decision (to challenge Dela Hoya). Because I’ve been working on Manny’s right hand for a long time. Sometimes it was there a little bit, against (Juan Manuel) Marquez it wasn’t there too much,” added Roach.
