Risking The ***els in Top Rank’s Crown

By T.K. Stewart - Make no mistake about it, Miguel Cotto, Kelly Pavlik and Manny Pacquiao are the three shining ***els in the crown of Bob Arum’s Top Rank.

And surprisingly, the ageless 76 year-old Arum, not normally known as a risk taker with his meal tickets, has decided to go all in.

First on the roulette wheel is the unbeaten Miguel Cotto who will go in tough against Antonio Margarito on July 26th at the MGM Grand. It’s Cotto’s most serious challenge and there is no certainty that he will come away the winner.

”I promote both of these fighters...They are both terrific fighters,” said Arum of Cotto and Margarito. “The one thing I take pleasure in is that the battle of these two guys are in the biggest fight in years and in a fight that is attracting a lot of attention. Bob Arum will be sitting at ringside with the outcome having absolutely no affect on me – that’s how I like it.”

Rolling the dice next is undefeated middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik who will fight Bernard Hopkins on October 18th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Arum admitted the fight against Hopkins was not his first choice and he has criticized Hopkins in the past for hanging around the sport too long and for making boring fights. But with few marquee opponents to choose from and with HBO forcing his hand, Arum claims he was left with no other viable alternatives.

Finally and perhaps most surprising of all, Arum might risk the crown ***el and bet it all on Manny Pacquiao against - stop the presses - none other than The Golden Boy” himself, Oscar De La Hoya. Were that fight to come to fruition it would be a surety to take place on December 6th also at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. [details]

Cotto is doing the right thing. He is dealing with his prime directives. What Arum is doing with PAc and Pac is a joke.

Arum is giving his main cash cows some good and risky fights. Cotto even though I think he'll win will be in a life and death battle with Margarito. Pavlik will be in there with a crafty veteran that knows how to win and really doesn't care if it's ugly. Then if Arum get's Pac a fight with DLH then he's giving his man the biggest payday possible for him. Even if Pac loses he'll still have some big fights if he still wants to keep on fighting.

Arum's givin the fans the kinda action fights they want. Pavlik v B-Hop is an exception, but it beats the Rubio fight he was gonna have.

                What risk?

Let's see Arum puts Cotto in against Margarito who he also promotes sounds like win/win situation for Arum.

Arum sacrifices Pacman to DLH in a fight no one (Roach is selling the fight) really expects Pac to win. Pac has nothing to lose in that fight and is getting the biggest payday he will ever get in his career if the fight happens.

Pavlik/Hopkins, lets face it Hopkins is more of a household name. Hopkins has nothing to offer at this point of his career against a young lion like Pavlik. Even if Pavlik did lose it will be a close decision and won't hurt his career cuz they will say he moved up to challenge and his middleweight throne is not on the line.

Arum is not a risk taker by any means!!! **** Arum!

Arum is a typical *** who keeps his *** gold well and truely dangeling around his neck.
