MAYWEATHER wins ESPY award for "Best Fighter"

Floyd Mayweather tops Georges St. Pierre for ESPY award

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 18, 2008 at 7:30 am ET

Georges St. Pierre, the only mixed-martial-arts fighter nominated for a 2008 "best fighter" ESPY, fell short in voting for the award.

St. Pierre, the UFC's current welterweight champion, lost out to boxer Floyd Mayweather, who posted memorable victories over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in 2007.

This year's ESPY award winners were revealed on Thursday during a ceremony in Los Angeles.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, the other nominees for the category, which became official in 2007, were Kelly Pavlik, Joe Calzaghe and Holly Holm -- all boxers.

Other than St. Pierre, no MMA fighter, event, bout or moment was nominated for an ESPY this year.

The ESPY awards (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards), a sports-achievement-recognition program created by ESPN, began in 1993. The awards have been determined exclusively via an online fan vote since 2005.

The 16th annual ESPYs broadcast airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN HD.

lolz.. read the comments the bitter MMA fans left:

they claim MMA is a more popular sport but when Mayweather wins the award their excuse is it's a popularity concert.."ugh: if that was the case then wouldnt St.Pierre would have won?

Actually it covers the last half of last year with the first half of this year. At least that's what the ESPN ballot said.

It's a disgrace they do not include sumo fighters in their ballots.
