There's a few good ones, like Chris Arreola and Eddie Chambers. Many people will not admit the East European heavyweights are good, and so losing to them becomes a disgrace, but if the American sports media was not so hard on their fighters, things might improve.
The biggest problem with US boxing is a notoriously bad promoter who has had many of the top heavyweights under his control. Don King has ruined many heavyweight prospects by keeping them inactive and then putting them into a title fight or short-notice fight which they're not really prepared for. A European, Mario Preskar, signed with King last fall and has not fought since.
As a rule, American heavyweights don't lack heart. Tony Thompson did his absolute best against Wladimir last Saturday, and the people who are saying he lacked heart are just bitter. He withstood Wlad's barrage of hard rights better than most people would have, and lasted into a later round than over 85% of Wlad's opponents.
Rahman did seem to lack courage last night, but he's the exception rather than the rule.Comment
