            He was an alphabet title holder, not the world champion. The world champion at that time was Lennox Lewis. By definition it is impossible for more than one person to be the world champion at a given time in a given weight division.

                  Do you think Lewis would have agreed to an immediate rematch with McCall? It took Lewis three years to rematch him, by which time he'd had almost three years of Steward's tutelage, had learnt how to fight tall, and had regained his confidence. That's almost exactly analogous to the Wlad-Corrie situation, except that Corrie retired in the meantime.
