    Barrera Quits GBP!!!!

By Ed de la Vega, DDS, PhilBoxing.com, 11 Jul 2008

Los Angeles, CA: - We just got word from a reliable source that Marco Antonio Barrera has terminated his association with the Golden Boy Promotions.

Barrera who is in Los Angeles with his brother George called my source to inform him of the issue. They met at the Grand Wilshire Hotel near downtown Los Angeles.

According to the source, Barrera was not too happy of the fact that he has not been given a fight since losing to Manny Pacquiao. Although no further details was mentioned by Barrera, he indicated that a press con may be called tomorrow announcing the break and the signing of the formal severance of his relationship with Golden Boy.

Barrera according to the information given to this writer also spoke to Manny Pacquiao via phone regarding the possibility of doing a co-promotion with the MP Promotions fitting Mexican boxers who are under Barrera’s promotion group and Filipino boxers.

Barrera wanted to do the co-promotion in the Philippines since he feels it will be easier to get Philippine visas than US visas for his fighters. Barrera apparently has many boxers from 108 to 126 lbs. Certainly, finding Filipinos boxers within those weight classes would not be too problematic for Pacquiao and his group.

Barrera requested an appointment to meet Pacquiao when the Pacman comes to Las Vegas in two weeks to finalize his fight with Edwin Valero and watch the Cotto-Margarito tiff. In that fight Pacquiao will also have an opportunity to see two of his protégés who are on the undercard, Bernabe Concepcion and Vernie Torres.

At Las Vegas, Barrera wanted to lay down the cards to Pacquiao and discuss the possible partnership to hold a Mexico vs. Philippines boxing card in the very near future.

Barrera was offered a fight by Alex Arthur and rejected it...this article is false

That and Barrera said he was retiring so why would he be unhappy with Golden Boy not giving him a fight? That's his fault then.

do you think he could've gotten more money if he had the belt and hadn't loss to marquez the fight before?

i think he would've. golden boy didn't want him to lose the belt to manny , prefer to lose it to juan instead to set up a marquez-pacquiao fight?

just guessing. not basing it on anything but my own assumptions on why marco would be mad at gbp IF the story is true......

I like the idea of this partnership. I've always had a problem with gbp only showcasing filipino fighters from 1gym as if that was all the Philippines had to offer. This partnership would open alot of doors 4 filipino fighters not under ALA and we should see alot more talented more promising prospects if this goes through

Wow, seems like a messed up situation. Hopefully all goes well for Marco.

We can verify tomorrow. IMO the writer is a very reliable source.

If it's real I think it's not the best move from Barrera because he's a partner at GBP as well, he stands to lose a lot of money if he severs ties with GBP and he shouldn't be fighting anymore anyway.
