How Can Anyone Say Boxing is Dead?!?!?!?

i was sickened to find the news of Pac-man Diaz on the last page of the sports section of the NY Times the day after the fight under "Other Sports" behind horse racing, track and field, and DOG SHOWS!!!!!!! How pathetic is that?!? I mean we're talking a sport that used to be the most prestigious of all. muhammad ali, joe louis, mike tyson, sugar ray leonard- these guys were larger than life!!!

Anyway, for us true fans, the past two years have been the best in the sport for a while. 2008 is going to be even better than 2007! Forget about the awesome fights thus far (vasquez-Marquez iii, juan lopez- ponce de leon, kelly-jermain ii, williams- quintanta i and ii, roy-tito, pacman-jmm ii, dawson-johnson, katsidis- casamayor!!, miranda- abraham, tarver- woods, calzaghe-bhop, marquez-lopez, campbell-diaz, arreola-witherspoon, holt-torres, etc, etc). Just look at the some of the upcoming fights and tell me its not awesome to be a boxing fan right now!!!

    RJJ - Calzaghe
    Campbell - Guzman
    Cotto - Margarito
    JMM - Casamayor
    bute - andrade
    judah - clottey
    sugar shane - mayorga
    ivan calderon - hugo calzarez
    tua- arreola (hopefully)
    Peter-Vitali
    mijares- montiel!!!
    nonito donaire- jorge arce
    Diaz- Katsidis
    Pacman - Valero
    Haye - Maskaev
Toney- Rahman (don't laugh, i wanna see my man toney back in form)
    Klitschko - Thompson
and so on, and so on

Boxing is back and by the time 2008 is over, it will go down as one of the best years for boxing ever! Your thoughts?!?...

Boxing is dead because all good fights most be paid for. I understand what ur saying but understand that new comers aren't gonna gamble to see a fight.

boxing's death isn't do to people not wanting to watch it, its due to disorganization. I love boxing, but there is probably not other profesional sport as poorly managed and disorganized. What boxing needs is a central governing body that also serves as a promoter. The creation of multiple governing bodies comes from the demand for revenue, and they all want it. Boxing needs something like the MLB, or the NBA, where the promoting and sanctioning come together as one. Only then will boxing be as popular as it used to be.

hm... in vegas? interesting. i guess since there is a big fight scene in vegas and vegas revolves around the revenue the strip brings in, it is big news there. But the NY Times isn't just read in New York, its the most respected paper in the US and is read worldwide. It's just discouraging to me.... At least ESPN gives it decent treatment. All I could ask is that SportsCenter covered fights more.
