There is a reason why Margarito has 5 losses

Margarito has 5 losses (with the exception of Larry Dixon) they were to South Paws!!! Margarito has trouble with lefty's. People forget Miguel Cotto is a NATURAL SOUTHPAW"!!!!!, that fights in the Orthodox stance! And it's not just because he turned pro when he was young. It's always been his lack of boxing skills and speed. The only thing that kept him winning once he became more of a seasoned pro was his size. And everybody knows that his best wins are against boxing duds who didn't amount to anything past a certain level.
I used to be a big skeptic of Miguel Cotto. I thought that he would get owned against Mosley and he handled himself pretty good imo.
Although he won alot of big fights before that, against decent skilled fighters like Malignaggi, Quintana and Judah.....I thought it was all a bit of luck landing the right punch at the right time. And eventually he was gonna get outclassed I thought.
And although Mosley looked alot slower then in his prime, Cotto showed good accuracy and in the late rounds good movement while still effective offensivly. He is the high level type of fighter Margarito can't beat and never will beat with what he has in his arsenal.
That's why I have him boxing margarito's ears off. Everybody thinks it's gonna be a war but I got a feeling Cotto is gonna show his versatility and use against Margarito what he doesn't have....and that's boxing skills.
Sending Margarito back to fighting the Manuel Gomez's and Golden Johnson's of the world.
Ever wondered why that "LEFT-TO-THE-BODY" is so lethal??!!!Last edited by guzi815; 07-09-2008, 05:10 PM.Comment

I agree that Cotto will probably beat Margarito, but I don't know about box his ears off. Cotto's 'boxing' skills are really little more than a good, fast jab and an astute appreciation of when to attack and when to back off. His major weapons remain the brawlers tools of hooks to the body. And it's not just because he turned pro when he was young. It's always been his lack of boxing skills and speed. The only thing that kept him winning once he became more of a seasoned pro was his size. And everybody knows that his best wins are against boxing duds who didn't amount to anything past a certain level.

However, in this particular fight, if Cotto is as smart a fighter as I think he is then his jab and straight punches will be key. Margarito, at times appears to have no defense of his head and his reflexes are shocking. Time and time again in his fights I've seen punches down the middle go straight through his guard and land smack in his face before Margarito even realises they've been thrown. This is how Santos was beating Marg in their second fight, his straight punching was just crisper and more damaging than Marg's wide style and went a long way towards keeping Marg off Santos. If Cotto can replicate this then he should get a pretty wide decision in a fight where Margarito is basically quite ineffective.
However, to say that Margarito poses no risk whatsoever to Cotto is untrue. There are question marks over Cotto's chin and it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that Margarito may simply KO Cotto at some point, but I do think this is unlikely. Cotto should definitely be cautious in the early rounds though. A bigger risk to Cotto is Margarito winning by a cuts TKO. Miguel cuts easily and Margarito's punching style has a habit of opening up nasty ones. For me this is the most likely scenario in which we will see a Margarito win, but outside of that I am expecting a pretty clear Cotto decision.Last edited by abadger; 07-10-2008, 04:35 AM.Comment

I give the edge to Cotto in this bout because he's simply more versatile. However, he's gonna have to stand and trade. Sure he'll outbox him in certain rounds but he can't win the fight that way--there's a big difference between Mosley pressure and Margarito pressure.
I'm not sure when Cotto became this defensive wizard (or are you guys forgetting that in order to box effectively you need a good D?) because if there is anything that's lacking, it's his defense. It has improved greatly over the years but is still average. And a guy who throws as many punches as Margarito does will exploit that.
Cotto is going to have to nut up, stand and trade with Margarito early and later. And be able to hurt him - which I believe he can do. This is gonna be great.Comment

why does everybody make such a big deal about Margarito and the ear thing? It's not that much skin and just cartilage . Thats why fighters with ****ty defence get cauliflower ear. It's not uncommon for them to burst. Lujuan was a can anyway.Comment
