Showtime to have free fights on CBS

What do Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, George Foreman and other fighters who've captured the imagination of the American public have in common?

They were introduced to the nation on free broadcast television.................
another intersting quote is one where Showtime claims HBO is hurting boxing.

Hershman also observed, "I would think it's in the best interest of both networks to avoid counter-programming. All it does is split the audience, which is too small to begin with. But it's a strategy at HBO, and I think it's one of the most damaging things they do to the sport. They counter-programmed us seven times last year. It makes no sense to me."

I was on vacation so.........but I strongly agree with some of the statements. HBO is more concerned with beating Showtime and getting more of the boxing pie than in actually making boxing and the pie bigger.

Its been horrible, how many threads have we had this year that started....which will you be watching this weekend? To then have the following week have no fights on either network.

Its terrible, but at the same time, im not convinced that SHOWTIME isnt partially to blame here.

I have always been against the way HBO has handled boxing, But Showtime isn't perfect either. IMO

Good read. This would be a huge boost for boxing if they can work something out with CBS.

"I would think it's in the best interest of both networks to avoid counter-programming. All it does is split the audience, which is too small to begin with. But it's a strategy at HBO, and I think it's one of the most damaging things they do to the sport. They counter-programmed us seven times last year. It makes no sense to me."

Seven times in one year, I think HBO is trying to put the squeeze on Showtime.

"Think about the synergy we could have," Bob Arum said recently. "A countdown show on CBS; promos on college football and NFL telecasts."

I hope they can make this happen.

HBO and Showtime had a tacit agreement that one would have the first and third Saturday of the month while the other would have the 2nd and 4th. You can see that its been HBO putting there shows on traditionally Showtime dates to the detriment of the fans and the sport.
