Holt Knocks Out Torres in Round (and Minute) of the Year

By Jake Donovan - They promised post-Independence Day fireworks, and junior welterweights Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres delivered and then some.

The two combined for three knockdowns in just over a minute of action, with Holt eventually emerging victorious with an explosive first-round knockout in Las Vegas.

The bout served as the main event of a special Saturday night edition of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation series.

Both fighters came out swinging in what instantly became the frontrunner for 2008's Round of the Year. It appeared as if Holt's shaky chin would do him in; a right hand by Torres had the New Jersey native on the canvas thirteen seconds into the fight.

"I was OK," Holt said of the first knockdown. "I got momentarily distracted from a punch I didn't see coming."

Referee Jay Nady would issue what would be the first of three counts. Holt recovered but found himself on the canvas seconds later, though insisting it was a knockdown that shouldn't have been.

"I was slipping, I wouldn't call that a knockdown. I was off-balance and throwing punches, trying to keep him at bay." [details]

Holt fought like he did against David Diaz and it worked wonders. He is probably one of the best counter punchers in the world, he didn't need to fight that way to win.

In America, we don't throw beer cans at the fighters because Holts better then there Colombian fighter. The first fight should have never taken place in Colombia, so Holt wouldn't have to keep worring about the next can off beer being chucked at his head If Holts didn't have to worry about the slippery ring and the beers being thrown at his head, then he would have won the first fight instead of worrying about the beer, torres, fans, and ****ty ref.

Holt is by far the hardest counterpuncher in the world. I mean, when he lands flush he can be devestating.

Torres was OUT. Just like Marciano. Unbelievable

Great composure by Holt. Because Torres came out like a hurricane. And often times fighters fight fire with fire and end up getting hurt. After the second knockdown he kept the right in perspective and landed a beautiful shot that literally put Torres to bed.

Not attempting to start an argument here but need some clarification. Am I the only one who thinks that Torres was caught by Kendall's head and not a punch? It happened so fast and watching the Showtime Replay it appeared to me that Holt and Torres heads came together and Torres went down as a result?

****Nevermind Torres is acknowledging that he was caught. Looked like a headbutt on the replay. Stand corrected.

I think it was a lucky desperate shot!!! you guys are full of ****! He got dropped the first time clean, I would say he was cold still. But that punch wasn't exactly planned!!!!!! It was like a lion defending his cub. When you 've gotten knocked down twice you're gonna throw wild to buy some time!!!!

I think that some people in this thread are being facetious. Holt had no chance at landing that shot if it werent for the headbutt. Plain and basic common sense.
