Antonio Margarito, James Toney Want Big July Wins

By Doug Fischer - With the month of July underway the countdown for a pair of pivotal bouts officially begins for two of my all-time favorite gym fighters, James Toney and Antonio Margarito.

Toney, who turns 40 next month, will engage in what could be his last high-profile fight against familiar foe, former heavyweight champ Hasim Rahman. The rematch between the two veterans, a Fox Sports Net-televised main event from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, will take place on the 16th of this month (a Wednesday).

That gives me this weekend and all of next week to schedule a “pop in” at Toney’s new gym, the 360 Health Club in Reseda, and try to catch the master ply his craft in the ring.

Of all the gym legends I’ve witnessed in Southern California boxing clubs over the past 15 years, from Shane Mosley to Edwin Valero, no other fighter comes close to blending the Sweet Science with the art of the beatdown like ‘Lights Out’.

Toney makes his sparring partners and ring opponents miss, then he makes them pay, and then he tells them about it in rather colorful language.

However, it was a low key and jovial Toney that met the local boxing media at Sisley Italian Kitchen in Sherman Oaks last month, not the bombastic and impetuous ruffian who seemed to delight in exploding into tantrums at most of the press events he took part in during the last two decades. I'm a fan as well, but when his trainer, somewhat dismisses the weight issue, I'm less than optimistic. He's a small heavyweight, he can't be efffective when he comes in 20lbs overweight.

Interesting read about Toney ands his new trainer! I thought Toney would come in the worst shape ever but maybe im wrong? I have to say i have to agree with Salukis statement that the weight doesnt matter that much if you train hard and eat right the fighter is in shape, no matter what he weights. But with Toney im not so shure if hes eating right! Saluki doesnt know what Toney does when hes alone at home or something. But it seems Toney is motivated in the gym and in good training and thats more important than anything else.
I still dont expect to mucfh of Toney cause hes old and shot.

I thought Toney looked pretty good in the first Peter fight, which I think he won, since then, not so much.

The most recent performace that impressed me was against Guinn. He was also verry fat then but he boxed verry verry well.

I agree. He has definitely been regressing since that first fight.

Antonio Margarito, James Toney want big july wins.

As far as sparring partners, I thought Alfredo Angulo was also sparring with Margarito. True or false

I hope Toney wins it. Even if he don't get to the HW title, I'd be upset to see him lose to Rahman, which I thought he did the 1st time. Beat Rock and go out on top James. I'm a big fan of Tony and Cotto, so no preference, but my prediction is Tony.
