Kelly Pavlik: Wright an Option, Paul Williams is Not

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is tentatively set to return on September 27 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The opponent on the other end of the ring is still up in the air. [details]

wtf he says one thing, his promoter says another every couple minutes. just fight a cupcake (even though Wright would be GREAT) and take on Abraham ASAP

        The best opponents would be

        1. Wright (good name on Pavlik's resume)
        2. Griffin (another middleweight world title for Kelly!)
        3. Williams (current world titleholder, good name)

Any of those would be great!

Mora is not available according to ESPN, and Rubio would not be a meaningful opponent.

I think it would be great for him to go:

            Wright - September

            Griffin - December

            Abraham - April/May 2009

Then maybe a rematch with one of these three if they end up good fights, potentially leading to a classic trilogy. Every great fighter has a trilogy somewhere.

I hope Winky wakes the **** up and capitalizes on this opportunity. sounds like he could be in if he don't ask for too much. I think he would beat Pavlik. He better do this **** now before it's too late. Otherwise, the other title holders got fights comin up at 160, so fight Mora.

I say take Winky. Prob the best card to be made minus the others who he can't fight for they have their own bouts. He can get the most out of Winky while all but securing win #35. Winky isn't the same Winky and while it would be meaningfull in part, he will still face the "Winky is shot, etc. etc." from the media. If not Winky, I say get another belt. Either way, I don't see anyone on that lineup to truly put the ghost to that much of a test. AA should be an ASAP fight pending his fight outcome for Kelly's following match IMO.

Winky or the Sturm/Griffin winner to set up a complete unification with Abraham, something that I think only Hopkins has done. I'd actually go for the Sturm/Griffin winner because it would add a belt and start the path to something historic. Winky is coming off a loss and has been far too inactive to get a shot at the champ right away.

Sturm has as about as much chance of winning as Williams does. Less actually. I do agree, however, that it would certainly put more fuel in his tank with another belt. My only contention was that Winky puts more eyes to the TV come fight night than a Sturm would do. Either way, as I said, Kelly has the easiest pickings from these slim lineups. He will be criticized for winning either, so it's just business as usual and await the fate of AA in the meantime.
