Oscar de la Hoya. No matter what he does for the rest of his life, he will always be "The Golden Boy." He has a public image that is embraced in America as a new age symbol of ethnic achievement. Oscar de la Hoya can do no wrong for the rest of his life.

Ali is a more internationally embraced emblem. Americans, ******s, boxing fans abroad and at home view him as an icon.

Rocky Marciano is the blue collar idol for Americans. He's the Everyman's Fighter.

Ali was not popular when he was in his prime, Floyd Patterson was much more popular back in the 60's, I remember watching the 2nd Patterson Ali fight and most of the crowd where behind Patterson.

Of this era, it's easily Arturo Gatti by the majority.
