Fernando Vargas' return to the boxing ring is set.
Vargas, who has been out of action since last December rehabilitating a bulging disk in his back, will fight on an HBO Main Event in a 10-round bout on March 16.
While Vargas' opponent has not been determined, the former junior middleweight champion has decided to return as a middleweight and will fight at 160 pounds.
Vargas' co-manager Rolando Arellano said they are looking at a number of potential sites for the bout, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Texas.
"We're focusing on Chicago per Fernando's request because Chicago has the second largest population of Mexican Americans in the United States," Arellano said. "But ultimately it always comes down to economics.
"You narrow it down to three venues and then crunch the numbers and check the bottom line."
Arrellano said Ceasar's Palace has expressed interest in possibly hosting the fight, as has Mandalay Bay.
Vargas' last fight came on Dec. 12, 2003, when he defeated Tony Marshall with a seventh round TKO.
Shortly after that bout, Vargas pulled out of a scheduled fight with Javier Castillejo because the pain from the bulging disk was too great.
With therapy and anti-inflamatory drugs, the pain was reduced enough to allow Vargas to start training in August.
He is currently working on his conditioning and technique with trainer Danny Smith.
Vargas was forced to take a few days off from training to have a benign cyst removed from under his right nipple.
During a short surgery, the cyst and part of his nipple were removed. Vargas was out of action for just a few days.
"It was nothing serious," Arellano said. "It's something that athletes are known to have happen.
"It started to protrude so we got it checked out, but the doctors were never concerned about it being anything dangerous."
Cervantes victorious: Oxnard boxer Daniel Cervantes, who is managed by Vargas, won his second career fight last Friday at the Chumash Casino.
"He looked a lot better in this fight than he did in his debut," Arellano said. "His next fight will be on the undercard of the Sugar Shane Mosley and Winky Wright fight (on Nov. 20 in Las Vegas)."
Finally, back in the game...opinions fellas?
