Has anyone remembered that Mike Tyson in his respective prime also had a great jab? He would slip jabs, jab with Holmes and get inside to punish him, catch him with a right hand when he got lax with the jab(Holmes down in the fight). Tyson definitely had the tools to beat Holmes.

      Tyson UD 12.

Holmes TKO 8. Just like the Douglas fight but more dominant. Holmes when he fought Tyson was 38, inactive, and had barely trained. To say it'd be similar to that fight is just plain wrong.

I'd have to say I don't consider the Tyson that Douglas beat to be the "prime" Tyson. The prime Tyson was the one who destroyed almost everyone in his path up to that point. Against Douglas he looked a step slower, a shade more tentative and mentally lost. Yeah, sure, Douglas had something to do with that as well (he fought a great fight), but Tyson didn't have his animal instinct with him at all that night.

            A "prime" Tyson beats a prime Holmes - TKO7.

So Tyson 'aged' over night at 23??? Every fighter has off nights. The very best still manage to win. Tyson showed many of the same weaknesses in the Douglas fight he showed in previous fights, they were just not exploited as much as Douglas did it. Tyson was indeed in his prime, 23 years old at his regular fighting weight, getting jabbed to death and tied up by Buster Douglas.

Exactly. How does one just dip out of their prime when they are/should be on top of their game? Tyson couldn't handle the jab and many fighters before Douglas showed the way to beating Tyson was to keep a strong jab in his face, tie him up, and have some heart. Holmes would execute this plan more precisely and to a much more devastating degree. Holmes TKO inside of 9.

                  douglas vs tyson

age and physical conditioning didnt have anything to do with that. Tyson could not have been less interested in boxing in early 1990. I beleive tyson had lost his mind by this time. Douglas had lost a miserable performance to tony tucker not too much earlier. Tyson destroyed tucker to unify the titles three 2 1/2 years earlier. Besides tyson nearly knocked him out 1 round earlier. motivation is what lost the match for tyson. i think the holmes match would have been similiar to any other of tyson's earlier title fights.

Styles makes fights. Unless MT finds a way to avoid Larry Holmes' classic left jab and get past his defense, he'll be punished by it...gets frustrated, loses his focus, comes forward...and eventually gets whooped by Larry's straight right which i reckon is heavier than Buster's.

The Larry Holmes that beat Kenny Norton would have been tough for just about any heavyweight to beat. He was very impressive the night he won the title and I'm guessing Holmes whups Tyson just like Buster did!
