    Andrey Tsurkan vs Vanes Martirosyan

Top Rank and HBO have the Aug. 2 "Boxing After Dark" main event at The Palms in Las Vegas settled: Joshua Clottey vs. Zab Judah for the welterweight belt Margarito vacated. But now they're discussing the co-feature. Two possibilities head the list. The likely fight is lightweight Anthony Peterson (27-0, 19 KOs), who dominated Fernando Trejo Thursday night, facing Jose Reyes (23-4, 8 KOs). Top Rank toyed with the idea of matching Peterson with top-10 contender "Kid Diamond" Almazbek Raiymkulov, but decided against it. The less likely fight is junior middleweight and 2004 U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan (20-0, 13 KOs) stepping up against Andrey Tsurkan (26-3, 17 KOs). Martirosyan easily outpointed Angel Hernandez on the Peterson-Trejo undercard.

Tsurkan would be a good test, but I'd pick Vanes to win a hard fought decision.

I think Tsurkan would smash Vanes but if this took place and Vanes won I would be really impressed.

The last time I saw Jose Reyes on ESPN2 against Kevin Kelley at the Blue Horizon. Reyes brings a lot of youthful spirit but he has no power and didn't know how to deal with the much older Kelley's game.

The Peterson brothers aren't being pushed with any urgency. How they rose to the high rankings they have already is something I don't understand. Not that they aren't good fighters because they are, they just haven't stepped up to that level of legitimate contenders in my humble opinion.

They aren't ready to jump in with the top guys in their divisions yet, especially Anthony because of how deep 135 is.

I'm all for Martirosyan-Tsurkan. Tsurkan's pressure will answer a lot of questions that haven't been answered yet about Martirosyan's ability to handle sustained pressure and how good his chin is.

I'm not sure losing to a guy like Tsurkan would help Vanes. Tsurkan is nothing special technically, he's just a tough S.O.B. If a guy in Martirosyan, who is supposed to be a well-skilled fighter, cannot figure out Tsurkan and gets worked over then that opens everything about him up to scrutiny. It would also be a major moral defeat since his style is supposed to be bad for Tsurkan's and not vice versa.

The big test will be Martirosyan's ability to maintain his composure and stick to his game plan. His game plan will be to avoid a head on conflict and use Tsurkan's aggressiveness against him. I think he can but who knows with his temperament. If he does he should win. Tsurkan isn't winning a jabbing contest with an Olympian.
