Perhaps, although simply aging can be the impetus behind this over a long period. You'd be hard-pressed to find a fighter who, after a decade at one weight (and starting extremely young at that) doesn't have more trouble making weight. However, I seem to recall that (according to boxrec) a lot of Duran's fights in the late 70s were fought above the 135 lb limit (catchweights perhaps?).

Valuev is more like Primo Carnera. Not that his freakishness isn't the driving force behind what success he has had, but he isn't on the skill level of the fighters I intended to be mentioned.

True and yes, apart from his title defenses at 135, a lot of his other fights at that time period were over the weight fights.

Do we want to mention Jess Willard? He became the legitimate heavyweight champion by beating a titan in Jack Johnson, but I have no idea what sort of skills he displayed. The image he is always painted with is that of a beast in size who was just too large for everyone. But the visual image that everyone has of him is Dempsey delivering "the most murderous beating a man ever took in the ring", to quote the commentator.

I think we've finally seen it take its toll too; it's hard to blame his decline on age. He is the contemporary Rid**** Bowe in this department.
