This "The Contender = Popularity" myth

Where did it start? I mean this is seriously one of the most full-blown, false assumptions that occurs in boxing.

One of the excuses for Cotto-Gomez was that it was going to bring Cotto popularity because Gomez was on The Contender. What happens? HBO boxing produces one of the lowest ratings for a boxing match of all-time. BUT HOW? Wasn't Gomez the fan favorite on The Contender? Now we hear that one of the advantages of Pavlik-Mora would be to boost Pavlik's popularity because of Mora's Contender popularity. I mean, where do they come up with this ****?

You guys have to realize, the only thing the Contender did was make unknowns popular to BOXING fans, it didn't make them popular in general. If people cared so much about the Contender, it wouldn't be moving to it's third network in 4 seasons.

    Consider this myth nixed.
