Is it okay for a champion to retire with his belt?

Or do you think the only way a champion should give up the title is in the ring, by losing? I bring this up because I always see people ****ting on Lennox Lewis for not giving Vitali a rematch and retiring. While I respect the mentality of coming back from battle with your shield or lying on it, I think retiring with a win and a belt is admirable also.

    What do you guys think...?

No, a true champion should pass the torch in the ring.

Yes it's okay but not for Lennox. He should have given a rematch.

I think it's OK, if a fighter has lost his desire or thinks his body is breaking down and has enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life, then I don't see why it isn't OK.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked to see a rematch between Lewis and Klitschko or a fight between Mayweather and Cotto but it's their choice.

I think it is acceptable in Lennox's case, he was past his prime and had a really tough fight with Vitali. I don't know what to think about Mayweather's bull**** retirement. For one I don't really think he's going to stay retired for long. But he is in his prime, undefeated and really unproven as an ATG. That just left a sour taste in my mouth. But like I said, I don't think he will stay retired. So he can still redeem himself in my eyes.

I agree. A boxer that loses interest in fighting but still gets into the ring is begging for trouble. But yeah, as a fan I would like to see the torch passed but I don’t hold a grudge against those few who don’t.

As a fan, isn't it everyone's dream to see their favorite fighter retire undefeated or on a win with their belts?

I don't really think he's staying retired either but if he does, I understand his decision and I would be OK with it but it would leave a few things to be desired.

Normally yes, but not if he's still in his prime and only retiring to duck another fighter(s).
