    Right... and that was clearly in their best interests. I don't think we'd be speaking portugese though. It wasn't about the US... it was about the central american and south american colonies.

      our interests and theirs during (germany , japan) and after (soviet union) the war were the same. no point arguing about it. we helped them but we needed to help them. the sooner they got back on their feet after the war the better for us because of the threat of the commies.

      obviously i'm exagerrating a bit. doubtful portugal was big enough to really conquer us. i was just trying to think of how we benefited from our european allies as well. a better one to point out would've been the french sending us aid during the revolutionary way but that was against the brits.
